What is the water softener system?
Water softener system is a device which can reduce water hardness, mainly by reducing Ca2+ and Mg2+ in water. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, there was about 85% of American households have hard water, including homes with city water and well water.
Water softener is the application of ion exchange technology, through the resin Na+ and water Ca2+ and Mg2+ exchange, to absorb excess Ca2+ and Mg2+ in water, then to reduce the water hardness.
What is hard water? Does hard water harm for our health?
Our daily drinking water is actually divided into hard water and soft water. Hard water is generally the one which contains calcium and some chemical elements , and it’s relatively hard, so it is called hard water. Hard water makes scales in pipes, containers and boilers.
Drinking hard water is harmful for health, because hard water contains Ca2+, Mg2+,fluorine and other chemical elements. If you drink hard water for a long time, your body will take in too much chemical substances, and the long-term accumulation will make your body can’t fully digest and metabolize, which may lead to excessive deposition of Ca2+ and Mg2+ and then may cause stones to appear in the body. The best way to solve the hard water is to use the water softener system.
How does the water softener system work?
Water Softener system is called as ion exchange water softener, it’s like a magnet. In a traditional bar magnet, one end is “positive” and the other end is “negative.” Water softener is specially designed to remove Ca2+ and Mg2+ in the water, with an efficiency of up to 99%, and can also remove algae and suspended solids in the water, so that the treated water is softened and clean. Running raw water flows through a container containing ion exchange resin (softener) under a certain pressure and flow rate. The exchangeable ions Na+ contained in the resin are ion exchanged with cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, Fe2+,… etc.) in the water, so that the Ca2+ and Mg2+ content of the effluent of the container can meet our requirements. The exchange process is as follows:
2RNa + Ca2+ = R2Ca + 2Na+
2RNa + Mg2+ = R2Mg + 2Na+
That is, after the water passes through the sodium ion exchanger, the Ca+ and Mg+ in the water are replaced by Na+.
